A period of economic and political turmoil, Eveline was a girl who wanted to get out of her country. She met a real love who could make her escape, and planned to make it real. However, at last she chose to remain. With this ending, I was disappointed a little bit. But I could infer the meaning of her existence. She is not an idealistic but a realistic character. Eventually she chose the harsh life instead of new start. That means she is a symbol of the people who lived such situation hardly, unhappily but enthusiastically with much effort. With love toward her country, she finally chose it. Also, going other country and starting new life is also tough too. So she might deny escaping because of fear of new place. Thus, the reason why she wanted to escape was that she wanted to be free from everything and not to be under of something. But with running away with a boyfriend is being helped by him and being under of him. So, that choice was not a thing which she really hoped for. I surprised at her decision and was respectful for her responsibility. (195)
