Paralysis, which is a very imposing word in
this novel, makes me wonder about the real meaning of this novel. It was a bit
profound. However, when I thought about the situations of the time, I could
understand it better. The unreasonable and frustrating society of Dublin is a
symbol of the existence of priest. James Joyce might get tired of this. So,
with the death of the priest, he could express a sense of freedom just as the
boy felt when the priest died. In someone’s death, sadness and grief are the common
feeling, but as the boy felt differently, we can think about the hidden meaning
of it. So, strangely, the meaning of death can be positive in this case. It
implies not only a freedom but also a new start. People can get hope from this.
So, the boy can be symbol of the people who were suffering from the situations
of the time. These kinds of fresh symbol are the big feature of this novel. The
writer might want to give strength to people. In the gloomy and dark society
which looks with no bright future, as a Irish, he carried his duty. (196)
