When I finished this reading, I could also think about paralysis. I could compare this story with Eveline. In 'Eveline', the main character decided to choose the tragic decision. Also, in 'the boarding house', Mr. Doran chose to marry with her even if he did not love her. All of them caused because of an external situation or to keep something they wanted to maintain. Eveline wanted to keep her family and country because she loved them very much, so she chose to give up her love. Also, in 'the boarding house', there is a man, Mr. Doran who want to protect his high-status job and was afraid of losing his reputation. So he chose to marry even if it is not what he really hoped for. All of such things are paralyzed. Because of the gloomy and dark situation of society, people started to loose something which is related to full of vigor and energy. James Joyce expresses such things with his story very well. Instead of following the true heart of human, they choose to become following the realistic situation. (182)
