Araby-James Joyce

Title: Araby-James Joyce

rate: 6/10

At first time I finished reading this, I thought it is not that interesting actually. To be sure I expected a love story. But the ending did not look like the theme of it meaning real love. I got a little bit frustrated. But as I tried to find the real meaning, I could find something interesting in this story. In the Dubliners, James Joyce always used the bad situation of Ireland. So with this I could think that the meaning of paralysis and despair the boy felt. With the domination of England, James Joyce might feel spiritless at that time. The reason why he used the word paralysis is on this context. That the boy felt love at first time was bright and hopeful state of writer but as he found the real condition of Ireland, he might be dashed on this. With this I could feel the historically gloomy situation at that time. As like in Korea, there was a Japanese colonial era when the Japan dominated Korea brutally, in Ireland there was a dominance of England when England suppressed the happiness and freedom of Irish. So I could sympathize with this and knew the value of it. (200)
