not idealistic, but realistic
The Lady With the Dog, By Anton Chekhov (1899)
Rating : 9.5/10
As everyone knows, cheating is bad. So, for morality, the story should give lesson of punishment of wrong thing. Otherwise, this story is different. Because it does not have any punishment for cheating and does not have exact ending. In the result, the true value was hidden in it. Punishment for evil can be a good theme of work, but it's also important to show realistic things rather than ideal things. Everyone has their own secret, and everyone lives their life hiding it. Whether it's a secret against morality or not, in a way it exists as a form of desire to cheer up people in a hard and frustrating life. So I think regardless it's right or not, it inevitably exists. So I realized this story asks a question of people that which they will choose between choice led by instinct which is shameful but exciting or a choice for stable but boring life led by reason. It seemed to let anyone know that they would have these worries at least once in their lives. Also, whatever choice people make, whether it is right or wrong, it always depends on the individual and each person has responsibility for it. (200)
